Playing Hooky at Dollywood: The Best Kind of School Day

Every once in a while, you need a day that's less about responsibilities and more about making memories.

For us, that day happened at Dollywood.

While most people were sitting in classrooms and offices, Noah and I found ourselves walking through one of Tennessee's most beloved theme parks, enjoying a rare day away from school and work. Sometimes learning doesn't happen inside four walls, and sometimes the best lessons come from simply spending time together.

From the moment we entered the park, the stress of deadlines, emails, homework, and daily routines seemed to disappear. Instead, the day became about laughter, adventure, and seeing where the next path would take us.

One of my favorite things about Dollywood is that it offers something for every age. Whether you're a thrill seeker looking for roller coasters, someone who enjoys live entertainment, or just looking for a place to enjoy the beauty of the Smoky Mountains, there's always something to experience.

Of course, no visit would be complete without a few rides. Watching Noah decide which attractions to tackle next became part of the fun. Every ride brought a new challenge, another laugh, and a reminder that these are the moments we'll remember years from now—not the emails waiting in our inboxes.

As someone who has survived multiple brain surgeries and completed the Mammoth March twice, I've learned not to take these moments for granted. There was a time when I wasn't sure what my future would look like. Days like this remind me how important it is to embrace opportunities when they come along, even if that means taking a random weekday adventure.

Beyond the rides, Dollywood itself is simply beautiful. The park is filled with mountain charm, incredible landscaping, seasonal decorations, and views that remind you you're in the heart of East Tennessee. It feels less like a traditional amusement park and more like a destination built around creating memories.

One thing I've learned as a parent is that kids may not remember every detail of a school assignment or every ordinary weekday. What they often remember are the unexpected adventures. The days that break routine. The days that feel special.

This wasn't a vacation. It wasn't a major milestone. It was simply a day spent together at Dollywood.
